ST. MATTHEW 16:18
The Galilee Missionary Baptist Church of San Francisco, CA was organized by the late Reverend S.W. Jackson in October 1946, near the end of World War II, as many African Americans families decided not to return to the south after working “war time jobs in the Bay Area,” but to relocate in California.
The Church was originally named Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church #2, but errors made by mail carriers with the former Shiloh congregation -- forged the need for changing to the current name Galilee.
The church was moved from Galvez Street in the early 1960's to it current location at 1901 Oakdale Avenue. The move was an ambitious undertaking as the men of the church donated their time and talents to the building’s reconstruction. The building at Galvez had to be excavated and moved several city blocks on large trucks.
The wives of the men working on the building brought lunches to their husbands who labored strenuously for mornings to evenings until the building became habitable.
Galilee has had five pastors beginning with S.W. Jackson, O.D. Shileds, Eddie L. Foster, Alvin G. Williams, and the current pastor Dwayne E. Fisher.
